Axelspace Corporation, a Japanese microsatellite developer and operator guided by its mission of “Space at Your Fingertips,” has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jethi Software Development PLC, an Ethiopian technology firm, to collaborate on addressing pressing social and development challenges through the application of satellite-based Earth observation (EO) data.
The MoU marks a significant step toward strengthening cooperation between Japanese and Ethiopian technology stakeholders, particularly in the use of advanced space-based data to support sustainable development initiatives. The agreement was formally signed in Ethiopia on January 13 (local time) by Naol Debele, Chief Executive Officer of Jethi, and Yuya Nakamura, President and Chief Executive Officer of Axelspace.
The signing ceremony was conducted in an official and protocol setting and was attended by representatives from the Ethiopian Space and Geospatial Science Institute (SSGI), members of Jethi’s Board of Directors, and invited guests. The presence of national space and geospatial authorities underscored the strategic importance of the partnership for Ethiopia’s growing space and digital ecosystem.
Axelspace has identified the expansion of Earth observation data usage in emerging markets—particularly across Africa—as a key medium- to long-term strategic priority. As countries on the continent experience rapid economic growth, urbanization, and climate-related pressures, demand is increasing for data-driven tools that can support informed decision-making. Through this collaboration with Jethi, Axelspace aims to contribute its satellite technology and operational expertise while supporting the development of locally led, sustainable solutions.
Under the terms of the MoU, Axelspace will provide access to Earth observation data as well as technical know-how related to its analysis and practical application. Priority sectors for collaboration include agriculture, environmental and forestry conservation, disaster risk management, climate resilience, urban planning, and infrastructure development. These sectors have been identified as areas where satellite data can deliver high social and economic impact by improving planning accuracy, monitoring changes over time, and enhancing response capabilities.
Jethi will play a central role in establishing a local framework for the effective use of EO data within Ethiopia. This includes coordinating with government agencies, research institutions, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that satellite data is integrated with local information systems, policy priorities, and institutional requirements. By aligning global satellite capabilities with local knowledge and needs, the partnership aims to maximize real-world impact.
Together, Axelspace and Jethi plan to identify priority national and regional challenges, design scalable solutions that combine EO data with ground-based information, and foster the growth of a sustainable ecosystem for satellite data utilization in Ethiopia. This approach is expected to not only address immediate development challenges but also build long-term capacity for the use of space-based technologies within the country.
Axelspace is also actively engaged in broader initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between Japan and Africa’s space and technology sectors. The company participates in the “Emerging Countries Working Group,” launched in 2024 by Cross U, a non-profit association that promotes the co-creation of space-related businesses between Japan and African nations. Through this platform, Axelspace collaborates with partners to explore new business models and applications for satellite technology in developing markets.
Commenting on the agreement, Yuya Nakamura highlighted the growing importance of satellite data in emerging economies. “With the economic development of emerging countries, including those in Africa, the demand for the use of satellite data is expected to increase significantly,” he said. “We will work to build win-win relationships that create new value together with local partners from both the public and private sectors, leveraging Japan’s advanced technological capabilities and expertise to contribute to the long-term development of a platform for the use of satellite data.”
The MoU reflects a shared commitment by Axelspace and Jethi to harness space technology for social good, supporting Ethiopia’s development goals while strengthening international collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of Earth observation.
